"The show is sensual, gritty, inventive and intense. What a joy it is to see my work produced to such high standards......."

Lorca'sThe House of Bernarda Alba

“We have eight years of mourning now and not a breath of air will be allowed in from the street. The doors and windows may as well be bricked up, do you hear?”.

But nothing can stop the growing tide of desire of Bernarda Alba's five daughters. As the frustrated tension mounts, each holds on to their longings, jealousies and hopes for the attentions of the virile Pepe el Romano, promised in marriage to one of them.

Following their successful tour and London run of Naomi Wallace's One Flea Spare, Red Dog now brings Federico Garcia Lorca's final masterpiece 'The House of Bernarda Alba' to the stage in a new adaption by Kate Littlewood. In the 75th anniversary year of Lorca's death this is a stunning theatrical journey into the imagination of a great poetic writer, a theatre giant at the height of his powers.

This production will open at Foyer Arts, Stroud on 27th September 2011 and play there for two weeks before taking off on a tour around the country. Red Dog are offering schools and colleges the opportunity to see this production with post show discussion at special performances by arrangement. Please contact Kate on 07971 093397 for further details. With our renowned integration of acting, design and animation this promises to be an extraordinary piece of theatre ideal for GCSE/A Level students, performing arts/drama students and particularly students interested in art and textiles as costumes are designed by Corinne Hockley

  • Kate Abraham, creative director of Red Dog and actorQ:Why are you excited about this production of Lorca’s masterpiece?KA: Red Dog are committed to performing text-based, rarely seen plays of recognised merit, and this fits wonderfully well with our remit. It’s both politically and socially relevant and offers great parts for women. It is particularly exciting because it has offered us a way of working much more collaboratively, particularly with our designer Corinne Hockley and our animator Barney Heywood, and is a step forward along our artistic road – our work is about trying to blur the line between visual art and theatre, so that the created work becomes something to be enjoyed on many levels.Q: Why is the company called Red Dog?KA: Our name is based on a real dog called Red Dog from Australia, who came in and out of lots of people’s lives. His...

  • We have been working with Colin Sell on the incidental music for 'The House of Bernarda Alba'. I was tempted to suggest some songs titles from Mamma Mia. It struck me how appropriate some of the titles are for our story. I just know that we could make it work: 'The House of Mamma Mia'. We could keep all the big numbers - 'Gimme, Gimme, Gimme A Man After Midnight', 'Money, Money, Money', 'Does Your Mother Know?'..Don't worry Colin has his own ideas so I don't think Abba will feature in this production!Saskia Portway, Actor

  • This week has gone by in a flash! But what a great company, I'm really enjoying working with the other actors under Sue's customary inspirational direction and Colin's brilliant musical input. Hard work though, I'm finding a great challenge in experiencing all the anger and control freakery that seethes away inside Bernarda but needs to be expressed on stage in a contained way. Not to mention getting to grips with holding a tune while clapping, stamping, banging a tambourine and changing rhythms all at the same time! Lots of lines to be learnt now, so glad to have a weekend to let things settle into my somewhat addled brain and to let all the elements of what makes Bernarda who she is work their way into my own psyche. Family beware! I'm turning into a tyrant....Jude Emmet
